Wait what, you can't use a *code* editor when you're under 18 now?

@techokami @marekfort @Gargron I repeat…
Lawyers ruin everything. 🫠
@jimmylittle @marekfort @Gargron take a step back and reassess the question.
*Why* does *A TEXT EDITOR* require a ToS? What is the text editor *DOING* that makes this something that is even needed in the first place?I looked into it, and apparently it's because this editor is filled to the brim with AI generative bullshit.
Why does such a thing need to exist?

@tsturm I think I‘m gonna give Gram a try … https://gram.liten.app
@gereon @tsturm saw the Gram fork the other day in a different place. I'm not a Zed user, but the Gram author certainly seem to have the right idea on their blog:

@techokami @jimmylittle @marekfort And telemetry. Why does a text editor need telemetry? *Excellent question!*

@marekfort sigh, I swear, every time I use something that isn't idealistically OSS, it burns me in some way or the other.

@marekfort@mastodon.online
if that agreement is for the editor itself, that is unambiguously against the GPL's "further restrictions" clauseYou may not impose any further restrictions on the exercise of the rights granted or affirmed under this License
as such rights includeThis License explicitly affirms your unlimited permission to run the unmodified Program
though if it refers so a serverside component i'm not sure how that might work out
it's also worth noting that zed requires a CLA, so that technically doesn't allow contributors to sue them, one thing is for sure though, any fork of zed with those terms would automatically be illegal, since forks don't have full copyright over the original code, only the rights granted by the license, and as such are unambiguously liable for violating it -

Subject to these Terms, Zed will permit Customer to access and use Zed’s AI-enabled software-as-a-service offering (the “Service”), which enables certain additional features and functionality (including artificial intelligence and collaboration features) in Zed’s open source code editing software (“Software”).
Customer must be at least 18 years old to use the Service.
which is obviously still an immoral restriction, but with no legal implications afaik (unless the server software has a similar license, but that's pretty rare) -

@marekfort you must be 18 for subscriptions to ai slop generators

@marekfort If the world continues down this path, soon it will be harder to *enter* VIM than to *quit* it
