    Good morning to Public Transort Odin

    We are taking the train to go unfuck baby cousin’s malware-addled computer, and hopefully teach her the general idea for salvaging these things herself — she’s a compsci student but compsci programs rarely teach foundational computer unfucking.

    @0xabad1dea Comp Sci is very distinct from IT! I always called the IT guy to fix things, even as a senior developer! I figured they're like the mechanic, and I'm the driver.

    (Except for that job where we all had to run Gentoo Linux. Then we all had to be the whole thing!!)

          @0xabad1dea Eons ago I had a roommate who taught compsci at a local college. When students would take their computers to class to get her help, she'd bring them home for me to unfuck. Dunno if she took the credit, but I didn't care because I enjoyed doing it.

              @0xabad1dea A friend of mine had to travel with his rottweiler. To a small village, where only buses go. So he tried to buy a ticket for himself and the dog. The local bus company had no dog tickets, but the clerk lady was helpful: “A doggie can ride on your lap, sir, without ticket!”.

              Eventually he asked me to give them a lift.

                  @0xabad1dea

                  Uhh.. Really unfortunate line-break there...

                  Plus, it's not the CompSci student's fault they don't - and can't - teach foundational computing...

                  But somewhat related...

                                    @0xabad1dea Right Alt on European keyboards usually acts as Ctrl+Alt (eg \ on Slovenian keyboard is AltGr+Q or Ctrl+Alt+Q).

                                      @0xabad1dea I was always amazed that even back in my Uni days, there were CompSci students who didn't know how to install an operating system, nor assemble a PC from parts.

                                      Removing malware is definitely a step or five above those on the difficulty ladder, but still.... I just don't understand how people get into CompSci without some fundamental basics they picked up on their own.
