Finished #reading Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. Basically this guy and his ex-girlfriend's prissy prize cat are fighting their way through a live #fantasy themed game built in the ruins of Earth after it's taken over by an alien corporation, and the game is being watched by thousands of alien races from which Carl and Princess Donut gain trillions of fans as they kill enemy mobs and have boss battles to get to the next levels before their time runs out. This book only gets as far as the entrance to the third level and, of course, ends with a bit of a new mystery to entice the reader. Apparently this is #LitRPG ? Have I read a LitRPG novel? It was ok but like with the repetitive processes in video games I got tired of it after a while. If you're into that sort of thing, I imagine you'd like this book since the characters are entertaining and there's a lot of action and snarky humor.

#bookstodonI agree with all this. It was about twice as long as it needed to be. Too many repetitive battles. I imagine the rest of the series is much of the same, so I'll probably pass on it.

#bookstodonit strikes me as a 'hunger games' slash 'hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy' mashup with a heavy sprinkling of 'ready player one' for good measure.
i agree with your assessment. it is super derivative, but mostly entertaining. a solid offerring for current american nerd-core sensibilities.
i'm given to understand that the story begins to really pick up with respect to lore & world-building ca. book three.

#bookstodon@Nonya_Bidniss The series gets more thoughtful and interesting as it goes on. Yes there’s too much PRG procedural in there but it’s way better than it should be!
