Let the truth be told, let the press be free. 📰

Journalists give voice to the voiceless, hold power to account, and keep citizens informed often at great personal risk.

Too many face intimidation, censorship, and violence simply for doing their job.

This World Press Freedom Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting journalists and defending independent media.

Because free press is the foundation of democracy.

@EUCommission The free press relies on the ability to be pseudonymous, both for the journalists and their sources.

Don't undermine the foundation of our open societies by building infrastructure for ubiquitous online identity verification.

@ikuturso @EUCommission The sanctions are aimed at individuals. Either you think it is in principle okay that states and supranational organizations such as the EU can adopt and implement sanctions against individuals without prior legal process, or you don't. Basic legal principles such as "you are innocent until proven guilty" are not something you use only when it suits you.

@Lykkerik @EUCommission you still seem to be missing the fact that this is simply not a part of the legal system where this principle holds so it isn't a valid criticism for it.

now, to be fair I guess you could use that as a generic argument for sanctions being a problematic mechanism just in general but that is a pretty different discussion.

@EUCommission In Europe we are now not even free to call en veggieburger the way we want... And press may be free, but not independent from commerce and politics...

@EUCommission Then it would be nice if you'll stop with #digitalomnibus , #ChatControl 2.0, ID verification and similar changes that exposes the identities of these free press journalists.

@ikuturso @EUCommission You are innocent until proven guilty. Sanctions are punishment, ECHR 6 (2). If you don't understand that this principal is there to safeguard us all at all times under all circumstances you're open for tyranny. Either you've been proven guilty or you're innocent. Sanctions are punishment. Punishments are for those proven guilty. Attacks on free speech and freedom of the press are not to be accepted but to be protested whether they come from Germany, the EU or the U.S.!

Probably Lykkerik doesn't understand the concept of EU sanctions on individuals.

Maybe the #EU parties united in the parlement could explain this concept for their voters.

@ikuturso @EUCommission The principle is universal. Newspeak doesn't change that. If the government is punishing you they have to have a legal basis. And punishment by principle should only be applied when you after due legal process have been proven guilty. You support the individual punishment of a journalist AND his family without due process. That's abhorrent!

But do you understand that having special relations with Russia these days could put your name on the EU-sanctions list.
In fact the EU has a proxy war with Putinland. A friend of our enemy is, yes of course someone who should be sanctioned.
Of course this is a German case. I didn't find info about the journalist in Dutch media.

We know that the Zionist genocidal government of Germany persecutes people protesting the genocide. Hüseyin Doğru has been writing about that. We know that the President of the European Commission is Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen (born 1958) a staunch Zionist in support of the Israeli genocide in Gaza .

@EUCommission To include (please) "free from the private ownership/control of oligarchs, also known as "press barons".

The better model for a free press is ownership by a Board of Trustees pledged to uphold basic principles of probity & objectivity. Presently sadly lacking in the United Kingdom, with calamitous consequences for citizens.

@Lykkerik @HarmBotjes @EUCommission Doğru has been at this for a while now. Before the "RED" rebranding he was a central figure in "Redfish" which the Russian state media channel RT has directly admitted was funded by them.

To me it seems clear enough that this really is a Russia-run operation and so the sanctioning is most likely about that more than anything else even if Doğru of course wants to try to use it to further Russia's goals too.

@ikuturso @HarmBotjes @EUCommission The only thing obvious to me is that he and his family is being severely punished without due process due to his writing! Which makes this screaming hypocrisy:

@Lykkerik @HarmBotjes @EUCommission so are you disputing that Redfish is/was a Russian state media project and that he was a major figure operating it?

@ikuturso @HarmBotjes @EUCommission Hard to tell as I've seen no proof and he hasn't been allowed to get his case tried in court. RT is not prohibited in Norway. We hold free speech and freedom of the press in high regard.

@EUCommission Then why are pro-palestinian voices so oppressed in Germany? Why did Germany decline 3 places in the press freedom index?
