75 years ago, the path to the European Union began. ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ

On 18 April 1951, the Treaty of Paris was signed, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡บ joined forces to build a shared market, choosing cooperation over conflict.

Born from the desire for peace and a united Europe after WWII, this treaty laid the foundation for the Union we know today.

@EUCommission This treaty was concluded (slightly) less than 6 years after the end of the most disastrous war in the World's and Europe's history. And among the signatories, four former allies and two former axis nations, was still a lot of bad blood and it would take several decades and a new generation of European citizens to overcome this centuries-old hatred and mistrust.

This makes this act of foundation so remarkable. It is with our enemies we must make peace, not with our friends!

@EUCommission How did we go from a peace project to a a mass surveillance project? I do not believe the people who participated in founding the EU would look kindly upon requiring us to register with a state actor, through the EUDI, to take part in public discourse or talk to each other online.
