On 18 April 1951, the Treaty of Paris was signed, establishing the European Coal and Steel Community.

🇧🇪🇫🇷🇮🇹🇩🇪🇳🇱🇱🇺 joined forces to build a shared market, choosing cooperation over conflict.

Born from the desire for peace and a united Europe after WWII, this treaty laid the foundation for the Union we know today.

I do not believe the people who participated in founding the EU would look kindly upon requiring us to register with a state actor, through the EUDI, to take part in public discourse or talk to each other online.

And among the signatories, four former allies and two former axis nations, was still a lot of bad blood and it would take several decades and a new generation of European citizens to overcome this centuries-old hatred and mistrust.

This makes this act of foundation so remarkable. It is with our enemies we must make peace, not with our friends!
