@MariahL @techsinger @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer I don't know if its just me but I feel emotionally connected to my cane like, if it brakes and I'm in public, I genuinely panick.
@NicksWorld @MariahL @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer If my computer or hearing aids go down in public I get annoyed, too, though it's not panick. It's just a tool failing, I don't like my tools breaking. I suppose that could be emotion, but it isn't for me, it's just a feeling that I want the tool back. I couldn't keep that emotional distance from a dog, I think.

@techsinger @MariahL @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer I see. I don't know, maybe I'm just the weird one.

@techsinger @NicksWorld @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer I mean, I don't think it's wrong to be emotionally attached to something that gives you independence. It's scary if something breaks or if something happens to your dog.

@NicksWorld @techsinger @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer Are you kidding? My dog accidentally got into a bed of fire ants and I was a wreck. He was miserable and I just wanted to fix it.

@MariahL @techsinger @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer Yeah, but your dog is a living animal. That's different.

@NicksWorld @techsinger @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer That was a tough time. He was okay, just some swelling around his face but he didn't feel his greatest for 2 days or so. and yes, while it's different, it's disorienting if say your cane breaks. What do you do then. So no I don't think it's weird to panic.
-
@techsinger @MariahL @Kingslayer Yes but I still don't see how its justified.
@NicksWorld @MariahL @Kingslayer umm, people don't like being inconvenienced? People don't like extra work, extra fears, all that? They are justified to feel that way, aren't they? Nobody wants to work more than the minimum. That's a justified feeling isn't it? It may well be wrong to feel it, but it's human nature. We bring them extra work. They don't like extra work. The suspicion that we bring them extra work is in fact, true which accounts for the stigma.

@MariahL @techsinger @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer Thanks for the validation.

@techsinger @MariahL @Kingslayer That's like saying discrimination is justified. It isn't.

@techsinger @NicksWorld @Kingslayer But that's not something a PWD can control. That way of thinking isn't necessarily great.

@NicksWorld @techsinger @Kingslayer Look at it from the other side, our lives are extra work that the average person doesn't have to deal with and will never deal with unless something happens to disable them. It's not our fault that there might be extra work as you say. The stigmas aren't justifiable anymore. It's 2026.

@techsinger @vol4life8657 @MariahL @Kingslayer Well, we have to pay for cane tips, so that's an on going cost.
@NicksWorld @vol4life8657 @MariahL @Kingslayer compared to vet bills, food,toys, cleaning, tips are a rounding error, remember. If you do the math over a year, I think it would be under a dollar a day for a tip, and even under $2-3 a day for the occasional broken cane. The dog's food would cost more than that, leaving aside other bills.

@techsinger @NicksWorld @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer That's a cost someone chooses to shoulder. Nothing in life is free, nor will it ever be. If you choose to take on the cost that's on you. If not that's fine too.

@MariahL @NicksWorld @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer I don't think it's wrong, either. It's just not my experience.

@techsinger @vol4life8657 @MariahL @Kingslayer My brothers and I usually buy cane tips in packs so we have a lot of them at once.

@techsinger @NicksWorld @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer You can cut down on some of those costs by say doing grooming and baths yourself.

@MariahL @NicksWorld @vol4life8657 @Kingslayer Yes, precisely. That's the kind of thing which would drive me up the wall. It's a living creature to which I have duties and with which I'd get emotionally involved. I couldn't help that.

@techsinger @MariahL @Kingslayer That's like saying discrimination is justified. It isn't.
@NicksWorld @MariahL @Kingslayer Legally, it isn't. I never said it was. As a matter of fact, though, the stigma felt by many people is justified. It is accurate. Their acting on it is a legal, and I think it's a moral, wrong. However, they are correct in feeling it because it is a fact that it makes more work for them in many cases to interact with a blind person. Stigma is a feeling felt by others, after all, it's not some sort of objective thing, right?

@techsinger @MariahL @Kingslayer It's that same stigma that makes it hard for blind people to be employed even if a blind person has the skills to do a good job in the field they are trying to work at.
