    Am I the only one to use Signal and WhatsApp as file transfer tools between different devices? It's really handy.

      @davep absolutely yes Signal. However WhatsApp's entire business plan is based on metadata collection, so I didn't install it on any devices I decoupled from Big Tech

        @RedRed They'll possibly see the file name, but who knows what they do on the device before sending (or after receiving). I do tend to exclusively use Signal nowadays, but I've got one laptop where I only have WhatsApp installed because I'm a lazy bugger.

          @davep the consensus is that WhatsApp's E2EE is real, so they won't even see file names. But they do collect: when you use the app, how long you use the app, who you chat with, device information (hardware model, operating system information, battery level, signal strength, app version, browser information, mobile network, connection information [including phone number, mobile operator or ISP], language and time zone, IP address, device operations information, and identifiers), and your location.

          TL;DR: they are able to track you across the web when you browse on a device with WhatsApp installed

              @Daseinsappeal @RedRed
              Less secure. And takes fractionally more effort, which is the real reason.

                @davep @Daseinsappeal yes, and also, unless you're using Tuta mail or Proton, your emails are not E2EE, while Signal is 🙂

                  @davep I use e-mail and in theory it's possible with just one e-mail address but I'm lazy.
