@mcc ...ok where is none of the above?

Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
NOTES:
- If the answer is "none of the above" ,click "Show results". We can probably compare the previous poll to judge the significance of the scale of responses.
- Rather than worrying about differences between reel-to-reel formats, answer "reel to reel tape" if you can play at least one reel to reel tape format.
@mcc couldn't you run the player piano reel through a scanner and wave software over it? Not *easy*, but way easier to improvise than the others.

@laird Is this a thing you can do right now?

@mcc I'd need software to play the roll, but at least that can be played from a scan!
-
@ellenor2000 @mcc It almost certainly can, unless you're using something very obscure and basic operating system wise.
Back in the mists of time a CD drive needed a cable to connect to your soundcard, and then a piece of software to tell it to output analogue data, but digital transfers and playback of the track data have been a thing for over 30 years now.
@syllopsium @mcc I mean, I'm concerned the drive is broken. #lang_en

@mcc makes me wonder if my DDS computer backup drive can process audio DAT?
-
@laird Is this a thing you can do right now?
@mcc er, well I wouldn't need to *buy* anything. Scanners, cameras, etc are all on hand.
-
@wtrmt I have a Mastodon PR with a proposal for this which has gone sadly ignored
@mcc I thought it was just adding another option in the list. It wouldn’t count toward the total?

@wtrmt You could add an item on the list but None of the Above in combination with multi-vote polls gets kind of strange. You'd prefer the interface enforce NOTA not being voted for simultaneous with another option.

@mcc there’s no “none of these” option 🫣

@mcc oh! I get it now! You can choose more than one in the list!

@mcc This poll makes me once again regret giving away my portable minidisc player (and stereo component minidisc recorder), the pinnacle of futuristic portable music in the 90s.
I loved how those portable players had a boatload of RAM (for the time) so they could buffer enough to survive seek overhead on RW discs and only spin up the motor every now and again on pressed discs.

@mcc
I would first need to actually find the cassette player but it does exist within the bounds of the home. -

( @mcc FWIW the cassette audio would be crappy.)

Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
@mcc I selected "CD" and I stand by it, but I couldn't tell you the last time I attempted to use that hardware if my life depended on it.
-

@wtrmt also it would be nice if the interface let you just click nothing and click "vote" and it would know what to do

I'm 7 out of 8, but I can't guarantee they would work perfectly.
Also add wire recorder and ADAT.

@billyjoebowers is wire recorder hard to set up?

No, much like a reel to reel tape, with wire.

@mcc sadly none of our production gear can play player piano rolls so clearly I should hit up sweetwater just in case
