Good morning to Public Transort Odin

We are taking the train to go unfuck baby cousin’s malware-addled computer, and hopefully teach her the general idea for salvaging these things herself — she’s a compsci student but compsci programs rarely teach foundational computer unfucking.

Y’all, baby cousin’s keyboard is German. It was UX hell typing console commands on that thing. You have to use control-alt to type a \

@0xabad1dea Right Alt on European keyboards usually acts as Ctrl+Alt (eg \ on Slovenian keyboard is AltGr+Q or Ctrl+Alt+Q).

@0xabad1dea I was always amazed that even back in my Uni days, there were CompSci students who didn't know how to install an operating system, nor assemble a PC from parts.

Removing malware is definitely a step or five above those on the difficulty ladder, but still.... I just don't understand how people get into CompSci without some fundamental basics they picked up on their own.

@0xabad1dea Microsoft really fucked up when they decided to use alt for shortcut keys instead of its intended purpose of typing alternate characters

@0xabad1dea that's the reason why so many foss people are German: typing Windows paths on a German keyboard is terrible, so we use Linux instead and we all know that using Linux is a slippery slope to becoming a foss dev 😉

@nuintari @0xabad1dea I have a masters in computer science and have never assembled a PC from parts (I guess I would be able to that without much googling? But I never tried it)
My bachelor's thesis and master's thesis don't even depend on the existence of PCs (as they are on topics in theoretical computer science), computer science has many aspects and you don't even have to be into computers that much to enjoy it

@nuintari @0xabad1dea So if you got into it through the aspects that are closely related to math, you didn't necessarily pick up that much stuff about PCs

@0xabad1dea I feel the pain (even though yes, AltGr exists). Only the French layout is worse. I just use US-Intl no matter what the physical layout is, but I have plenty of colleagues using a German layout even though they spend a lot of time in vim 😩

@nuintari @0xabad1dea So if you got into it through the aspects that are closely related to math, you didn't necessarily pick up that much stuff about PCs

@nuintari @0xabad1dea in German computer science is called "Informatik" (a combination of "information" and the suffix "-ik") and doesn't mention 'computers', which I like for exactly that reason: its not just about computers!
