@mothninja OMG, thank you so much!

I'm just a crazy old lady who likes to curate lists of posts.

@lisamelton While you were taking a much-needed break from boosting, I stopped suggesting your account to new people looking for some help getting going. Now I can do that again (along with recommending @FediTips).

Hello everybody,
I'm a bit lost here, coming from "traditional" social platforms. I have no idea how this works and to top it all I'm also too shy to enter people's conversations.So let me introduce myself: I'm a Romanian artist, I paint in oil and acrylic. I am also a voracious reader, always on the lookout for new books. I enjoy most of all historical ones - fiction and non fiction, classic literature is my comfort food, yet I'll not refuse a good mystery or thriller.
@LitteRatty welcome!

@LitteRatty So you're the person we should ask about all the recipes in *Dracula*?

@LitteRatty Welcome.
You might want to find hashtags associated with your listed interests as a start. I'm sure you've had lots of advice already, though so I'll just say welcome again, and I hope you settle in soon

@tuckerm thank you, I'm happy you like my work, this means a lot to me.
What am I reading now: I have just started the second volume of the Welsh Princes trilogy by Sharon Kay Penman - "Falls the Shadow". I was so immersed in the first book, at the point I had to take a break from the series and come back to reality. Reality was a bit too chaotic for me, so I found refuge in Hamnet, finished it two days ago and since last night I'm back in XIII century Wales.
@LitteRatty My mother sent those Welsh Princes books to me a a few years ago after she got really into a holiday to Wales. They're fun!

@TheDonsieLass ooooh, what a marvelous thing would be to visit Wales! I'd strive to visit every landmark described in the books and superimpose what I'd see before my eyes over what it had been all those centuries ago. But no doubt the changes would be so radical that... maybe it's better to just keep seeing those places in my imagination.

@DaleHagglund thank you for the welcome and for your interest, I'll post some art as soon as I finish answering this introduction post. (Wow, I wasn't expecting so many warm and kind people to respond to this one, my first!)
@LitteRatty I just wanted add one more comment on your question: In the fairly near future (not sure just when, though) Mastodon is going to release "Collections", which are lists of recommended accounts to follow, usually on a particular topic. If you're at all familiar with BlueSky, this is modelled, at least loosely, on Starter Packs.
You'll probably be well on your way by the time Collections becomes available and your instance admin upgrades, but I think the hope is that Collections will improve the initial experience for new users of Mastodon.

@LitteRatty Hi, and welcome. I'm mainly a fiction guy. I'm a huge fan of anything Tana French. Reading her newest right now. Also Martha Wells' Murderbot books.

@LitteRatty@bookstodon.com
some tips for getting started
Posts are collected in the Local timeline which means your local server (in your case bookstodon.com),the Social timeline which is comprised of posters you follow or that follow you. If you've just arrived there won't be much on Social, so go to Global which consists of all the pooled posts from instances your own instance connects with. You'll find a lot of amazing things you never knew existed or needed to add to your Social timeline so:
β’ Follow accounts you enjoy, either because of their content or because of the interactions. This is how you fill up your timeline. Follow to excess and prune to adjust what you see turning up on your timelines.
β’ Interact with people - like posts, boost them (share with your followers), even comment if the topic compels you - the vast majority of people are on here to interact with others and people will gamely take part in a bit of to and fro.
β’ Go on Global any time you find your Social timeline has stagnated.
Hashtags work like the timelines but are narrowcasting on the topics they encapsulate. How you use them is up to you but as you are an artist the #oc tag is a good one for posts containing your own Original Content - people are neighbourly and will boost posts with content to their followers - adding image ALT text will increase neighbourliness. -
