@0xabad1dea so ridiculous! especially when they go to the effort of integrating the upper edge of a non-seamed pocket with a flap into the pattern, but then there's no actual pocket sewn in.

@0xabad1dea Sometimes there are also fake pockets on men's suit jackets. This is not nearly as diabolical but it gives a taste of the exasperation.

I had a jacket like this for years and it wasn't until my wife (very talented sewist) looked at it that I found out it really did have pockets, it just needed 20 seconds with a seam ripper to "enable" them. baffling.

@gsuberland @D_J_Nathanson @0xabad1dea this is normal for jacket pockets, they do it to make the dress look more shapely in the store. they expect you to cut them open so it should be very easy to undo, just cut one thread and pull it

@discontinuity @D_J_Nathanson @gsuberland I can't do this now because there's no money coming in, but in the past I hired tailors to fix those useless short pockets and give me real ones. It's something I should learn to do myself. But it's not something I should HAVE to learn to do because garment makers won't do it themselves.

Many higher end tailored items, whether jackets or pants, have the pockets tacked shut to keep their shape in shipping and in stores. It also means that an alterationist can make changes around them without distorting the lines.
The stitches should be further apart to make it easier to rip them with a seam ripper.
