Okay, if this is real, this is worse than I was expecting. I've been thinking about secondary outputs but I've been thinking way more about plastics, inks, other secondaries.

I have been worried about products shortages but maybe not enough. I am and have been assuming that there will be preferential distribution to corporations (which obviously includes most freight) and least preference given to individuals trying to do their own work themselves - e.g., like RAM over the last several months. But I haven't thought about the price side of that.

And holy shit it's gonna get fugly.

    So, uh, yeah.

Maybe buy an ebike. Maybe make some plans.

@moira Ugh, ran out of two 20 L solvent cans last week, let's hope the prices don't spike before I put orders in Monday. And now wondering If I should double my orders and also get backups of some of the others so I'm set for 6-12 months (hopefully, assuming I don't need to do a ton of large scale work).

@SRLevine @moira Hmm, this reminds me, I need to change my oil in my vehicle. Have duly ordered some oil so I can change the oil sometime in the next few months, with pre-shortage engine oil. Probably overdue, lol. I guess I could drive down the street, but it's so much easier to pick the right part numbers/etc. online, lol.

@moira oh it's going to be way way worse. The cargo ships themselves are running out of fuel. That will affect potentially everything

@moira and speaking of AutoZone, the entire car parts industry is going to fall apart because a scammer bought all the parts companies and blew it up. Hope you don't need anything from these brands:

@feld As per the article, though, supplies have been holding up - China has significant reserves and _have_ been implying they could keep things going through the summer.

Letting the price rise could be part of how, even if it doesn't fit their overall pattern of keeping prices down. It does kind of call into question the durability of their reserves supply of bunker fuel.

@masek Yeah, I found that reddit post in my search before posting. The other pages are about how clerks should help customers deal with the shortage, not the shortage itself, so weren't relevant to the shortage issue I was talking about. So I didn't bother including them.

(Just like you didn't need to bother being kind of a dick about it.)

It also doesn't address the validity question. If you check the thread you yourself linked, there are people who claim they used to work at AutoZone who say this memo is out of character for the company. Despite that, I still don't _think_ this is disinformation - but I still don't _know_ it isn't.

@moira if China is saying that are they referring strictly to China's interests? Are cargo ships operating elsewhere going to run out and what will the knock-on effects of that be? 😳

@feld At some level they are, _of course_, but they've been using this as an opportunity to build soft power, particularly in secondary-products supply. Not just fuels, but fertilizers, things like that.

Details on China's reserves is kept quiet by the Chinese government, but it's generally known to be of significant scale.

Or so I've read. Obviously, I'm not on the ground. I don't speak or read a word of any of the major Chinese languages.

Other than "ni hao," which doesn't count. xD

@Tijgertje1987 Oh, you're assuming Americans are onboard with this, and I can assure you, Americans absolutely are not.

The polling on this for shitstain is an absolute disaster in every respect outside the cult, and even the cult isn't really onboard. It hasn't broken their loyalty - yet - but they don't like it either. E.g., polling showing that half of _them_ blame their God Empreror directly for the gas and oil situation, and they're _not happy_ about it.

@moira I tried several times to scroll to the second picture 🙂 as it showed there are more to see. I felt cheated upon 😏.

I can’t say anything about that company. Never heard of them before. Probably because I live a continent away 🤪.

Not sure if it particular memo is real or not. However there appears to be reporting of constraints in lubricants.

Warnings from Shell, Valvoline, O'Reilly Automotive , Toyota and Nissan.

Cause is the base stock drying up to make synthetic lubs.

                                        Just a moment...

@Tijgertje1987 American Cascadia voted overwhelmingly for Harris, against him. We also voted for Biden, and Clinton. It was never close.

This highlights how the US _really isn't_ one political state, and how this is a long cold civil war where our side lost a real big round, partly because the ultrarich went _all in_ with the fash, e.g. buying Twitter to turn it into a fash propaganda and disinfo fountain.

Hence how he tries to destroy us when he remembers we exist. He hates us, too.

None of this means you should trust the US after this, of course. Foreign policy consensus has been shattered; you _shouldn't_, and _can't_.

But it's like... just a little like...

...please don't hate Scotland for England's votes.

                                          It's a little like that.
