@thomholwerda@exquisite.social so, which installation is easier? Windows 11 or what we can find in linux land?

Also, Windows 11 doesn't come with the Intel drivers for the Wi-Fi 7 Intel BE200, so now I'm hunting down driver files manually so I can continue the installation. At least the trackpad works in this phase, but without any gesture/scrolling support.

We're off to a swell start, everybody.

I sure do hope the screen comes back at some point during this Intel graphics driver update process. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Forced reboot was required. Install completed though. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Sleeping seems to hurt the Windows 11. Won't wake. Not sure yet what's going on.

I promised I'd use new Outlook. I'm using new Outlook. It's miserable.

What's with Windows 11 and laptop fans? I'm barely using the processor or Intel Arc GPU and the fans go haywire all the time.

                          It's the downloading of updates.
I had a room with 16 student PCs.
I switched them on all at the same time.
They had high CPU for over 1 hour.
Yes, computers sitting idle on the login screen.
                          Just to download windows updates.
After 1 hour the room temperature had risen by 1Β°C and the building AC was running.

How do I know? Another lonly PC I switche on, had high burning fans. And when shutting down it installed updates. And after that the fans were quiet.

Yeah this fan stuff is bonkers. Windows 11 seems to boost the CPU frequency a lot more often and for longer than Linux does, and the same applies to the integrated Arc GPU. Absolutely wild.

Used to be that Linux had the fan noise and heat when playing YouTube, but now it's Windows 11. This is bizarre.

Even at like 2% CPU it's rocking like 3Ghz. Why? That makes zero sense.

@thomholwerda There are two ways to make my notebook's fans scream: Do something that's actually compute intensive, or just boot the Windows VM and let it idle.

Since the early 2000s, my slogan has been "Windows has no place on laptops". The reasons back then were completely different than today (specifically, reconfiguring Ethernet in the pre-DHCP days was too much of a hassle), but the principle itself stands.

@gunstick @thomholwerda the laptop is new? A thinkpad of one year old, but started doing this as soon as I got it. Plus it's a general complain from everyone.
