@Strandjunker FYI, "obese"/"obesity" is a fatphobic slur, BMI is a pseudoscience, and fat people are not failed thin people who ate too much food. please do better.
@elexia thank you
one of the seldom discussed barriers to transition care is how medicalized fatphobia intersects with gender-affirming surgeries.
to the best of my knowledge, gender-affirming surgery teams will not operate on people over a certain BMI. nevermind that BMI is a pseudoscience, or that this barrier hangs on little more than surgeons' refusal to learn how to operate on fat bodies.
what that means for me, personally, is that even if I overcome the other logistical and financial barriers to gender-affirming surgeries, they'll just take one look at my BMI and say no.
so for the future, I'm faced with a choice of either destroying my body through weight cycling, or radically accepting that I'll never have the body that I want. and the latter seems little different than conversion therapy to me.
so I guess the effects from HRT are the best I'll ever get. better hope it continues doing good work.
@jackie [blanchard voice] peak ANP behavior, really
@vantiss @rowan.monster [exaggerated pouty face]
@dhfir whenever I think about that, my brain goes to: "no, actually, displaying any amount of arrogance would justify everything my abusers ever said about me being The Real Bad/Abusive/Shitty One in the relationship. it'd mean I was projecting my own shittiness on to them all along."
@rowan.monster okay, the level of CPTSD Brain I'm operating on had me interpreting your previous post as lighthearted sarcasm
and also. weh. thank you
️
@rowan.monster I know it's something others have probably expressed before lol. it's not like I'm particularly unique in that regard
traumatized trans girls are like "I'm going to start practicing self confidence!", say one nice thing about themselves, and immediately backtrack on it because it sounds arrogant to them
(it's me I'm traumatized trans girls)
@steff another Manhattan, was it?
@maia never stop being fake radicals, chaos.social folks
@mira """men""" are just transfems who haven't taken estrogen yet
PSA: men don't actually exist. men were invented by Big Heterosexuality to sell more marriages
@emily_rugburn @PallasRiot I predicted last year that the widespread propaganda effort to tie Diaspora Jews to Zionism and Israel would result in an increase in antisemitism coming from unwitting leftists consuming that propaganda.
and I hate it that I was right.
@elexia I was just about to add something to the OP along the lines of: "that's not even getting into the difficulties we face when bringing antisemitism up in leftist/social justice circles, where non-Jews are perpetually ready to dismiss our concerns as inconsequential compared to the Palestinian genocide. because even there, everything always has to be about Israel."
but I feel like you summed that up more than well enough in your second paragraph
I feel like most non-Jews don't realize the extent to which Diaspora Jews like myself serve as unwitting shields for Israeli Jews.
when violence happens to us, the Powers That Be turn it around and use it to beg empathy for Israeli Jewish colonizers.
and when we try to assert that, no, this is happening both because the rise of fascism is bringing a new wave of antisemitism to the fore, and because Zionists have created widespread propaganda designed to associate all Jews with the Israeli imperialist project, the tacit or outright response we get is: "if you don't want antisemitic violence done to you, you can always move to Israel."
with the implication that, because Diaspora Jews are unwilling to become genocidal colonizers, we're complicit in any antisemitic violence done to us.
and this, too, is antisemitism - the product of a warped synthesis of fascist ethnostatism and Zionist Christians' desire to see us wiped from the face of the earth so that they can usher in Biblical prophecy.
I and other Diaspora Jews shouldn't have to become a participant in Zionists' genocidal colonial project in order to escape antisemitic violence.
@Primavera @artemis honestly this is one of the most commonly misinterpreted feminist sound-bytes in social justice-oriented spaces, and it irrationally annoys the hell out of me
"the master's tools" in this metaphor aren't the tools used to build the house. they're the tools that he uses to keep us from destroying it. they're the tools that he uses to keep privileged women and marginalized women from expressing gender-class solidarity with one another and, together, from burning the whole thing to the ground.
in other words, Doctorow is just completely missing the point.
(for the record, the other common misinterpretation I see is from e.g. liberals preaching nonviolence on the assumption that violence is one of the master's tools - and that's equally ridiculous given the above.)
@artemis audre lorde: "racism will never dismantle male supremacy"
some white dude: "ah but what if"
