Unfortunately, older phones don't have the best DAC chips, but it's still a good idea. The Samsung Galaxy S5 with a Lineage operating system, for example, works well.
I once purchased a reasonably inexpensive Fiio DAP. Advantages: SD card and DSD format capabilities. Add a pair of good earbuds (Shure SE846 in my case
) and you won't believe your ears.
