This is not a remotely accurate analogy. The level of rage in this country over AI is uncontrollable and it's accelerating. Two people tried to kill Sam Altman in the last week. An Indiana planning official's house was shot after they approved a new data center.

In the political realm, the shift is unimaginably swift. Ex: 6 months ago, no Democrat for WI governor had a policy on data centers because building unions wanted them. Now every one of them is fighting over how strict their ban on data centers is.

The best analogy I think of is the opioid crisis. When people were ready to kill the Sacklers and everyone at Purdue Pharma, you can't come in and say anything that people think you are tolerant of the damage. You can't even argue "we can punish these people but we have to protect access to opioids". Everyone KNOWS there are uses but you can't build a policy around that because the public doesn't care. At all.

The only time you can have this discussion was years ago or years in the future after the public has taken their pound of flesh. Right now, it's an immensely dangerous idea for SFC.

@lunacharskii I think it's a reasonable conclusion. I believe this will be exploited in certain US states to block kids access to information about LGBT people, abortion information and honest readings of history which acknowledge racism, sexism and other forms of oppression.

@3janeTA you shouldn't worry, it's not like a group of very powerful people has ever wanted to abuse children.

@tknarr it works even better when it already knows you're a minor because the device told them.

@inthehands @miss_rodent this honestly isn't that far from what originally came to mind for me a few weeks ago which was "Epstein headers". But that's because I was being too literal as an engineer. Epstein cookies is something average people would get.

Here's all they'd have to do:

* Create a chatbot in an app
* Give users over 18 the normal chat bot
* Give users under 18 a chat bot where they subtly give the user more manipulative responses.

You can vibe code that now except right now, there's no to know with certainty how old the user is. With age verification, they know for sure who to target.

Age verification laws means every child predator who can create a website or an app will know if they're interacting with a potential victim.

And now, with vibecoding, literally EVERYONE can create a minimal website or app. These legislators are serving up victims on a silver platter.

Setting aside that it's totally unsustainable financially and may not exist long term, I think most people in FOSS who hate AI are at least somewhat open to that.
