Tomorrow, the European Parliament will vote on reducing tariffs on US goods as part of the EU–US trade deal agreed in August 2025. While this vote is limited in scope, it will in practice determine whether the broader trade deal moves forward. After careful consideration, the five Volt MEPs have decided to vote against this unbalanced deal. Here they explain why

1. It was always a shady deal.
The US used tariffs to pressure the EU into this agreement. Those tariffs were later ruled illegal.
Now Europe is expected to go along with the deal anyway? No thank you.

3. It weakens Europe in the long run.
It is time for the EU to stop Trump pressuring us into crappy deals.
That makes Europe more vulnerable in future negotiations. On trade, tech, and security.

We remain committed to a strong transatlantic partnership with the US - yet the current US administration has repeatedly acted in ways that contradict the mutual trust and reliability expected between allies, including by actively supporting the growth of far-right movements in Europe.

Overall, this deal offers uncertain short-term economic relief at a high long-term political cost. Europe must stop conceding under pressure and instead strengthen its strategic autonomy, diversify its trade partnerships, and invest in its own economic and security capabilities. The EU and the US are and will remain co-dependent, but this dependence goes both ways, and it’s time Europe starts to show courage.

2. It doesn’t actually give us stability.
The whole point of a trade deal is predictability. But the US has already threatened new tariffs on unrelated issues. Meaning: this deal can change anytime.
Why sign a bad deal just not to anger Trump when we know he’ll attack us anyway when he feels like it?

EU leaders are sitting together trying to figure out how to respond to Russia’s war against Ukraine - and someone in the room is allegedly briefing the Kremlin in real time.
No wonder Donald Tusk said he no longer shares sensitive information in Council meetings. Trust inside the EU is being destroyed.
As long as one government can block everything with a veto while undermining the Union from the inside, Europe will remain weak.
It’s time to abolish the veto.

Regarding "not at all costs": Volt advocates for the **principle of subsidiarity**. Decisions should be made at the most local level possible. @lexinova The honest answer: not fully yet. We've already made deliberate choices to move away from US-based services, but we're not going to pretend we've crossed the finish line. More transitions are in progress. But yes, US-based services are still part of our setup. Being a volunteer-driven organisation, replacing them takes time. We'd rather be honest about the gap than claim a sovereignty we haven't fully earned yet. Holding us to our own standard is exactly right, and we welcome it. (nr)
