@_elena I've noticed a lot of folks have no idea what "Substack" is. They see a newsletter. It has information they agree with. They sign up. They don't think about it beyond that.

Basically, if we want to take a bite out of the SS, I think we need to educate folks on what the uniform looks like.

IMO that has to go hand-in-hand with reaching out to writers in our lives and encouraging them to look at alternatives.

Every day I try to remember the paradox of convenience:

When a tool is challenging early, it sucks early, but often it's great later.

When a tool is easy early, it sucks later.

I'll take decentralized and janky over simple and evil.

If you run a FOSS project and use Discord for your community, it's only a matter of time before something breaks it.

Decentralize now.

I will note that API access is allowed on Discord under the terms of use. It's how moderation bots work.

This wasn't some hacked together thing. I followed the rules and they auto-banned me and won't tell me why.

This is centralization at work.

Discord broke my API access a few days ago, and said I "broke their rules" for "spam".

At no point have they told me what I posted which broke their rules.

All I've done? Host a bridge to Matrix.

(I plan to delete all of these when I can confirm things are federating as expected, lol)
