There's a strong feeling in the political class of UK exceptionalism... but, what is notable is how lightly such exceptionalism will be jettisoned when the costs are deemed too great.@ChrisMayLA6 All based on an underlying premise that it is just fine to normalise proving your nationality/citizenship to go about your daily business.
If you want tourists to pay for free stuff, charge tourist tax.
Trouble with that is businesses complain and the primary duty of government is towards business, isn't it?
(Also, HMT will not accept hypothecated taxes so the money may never get to the museums.)
