The chill I got when I downloaded the repo and realized the “exploit” was a zero byte file with a magic filename… -
A Short Story Inspired by Recent Conversations@futurebird oh for Pete's sake. I'm not meant to be sniffling at this hour of the morning.

A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it.@glitzersachen @futurebird spouse is normal sized. A bit of wire will make a decent sword. A bottle cap will make a nice shield. Spouse brings 2cm me outside, puts me on some moss or lichen. I get the best views of a moss ecosystem ever. WIN.
-
A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it.@glitzersachen @futurebird this is why I would have a knife and a shield and an accompanying spouse. I am genuinely not afraid of the local wildlife.

A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it.@AmeliasBrain @futurebird the ocean is the *one* thing that might persuade me to go big. But what if depth pressure effects your feet exactly as badly as it would normally?
-
A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it.@andrewg @futurebird I had considered the logistics nightmare of food, but not water. I live near a LOT of very clean fresh water.
None of us are mentioning managing the *output* of a 100x human....

A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it.@akamran @futurebird I thought of that. Realistically you could probably only hit one data center before they blow you up with an RPG or something. It's a suicide mission.

A mad scientist has a shrink/grow ray and you will be hit with it.@futurebird Smaller. Why: 1) I have ZERO interest in being any more visible than I already am. I have zero interest in consuming more food. I have zero interest in accidentally squishing rare plants and the occasional slow puppy.
Also I would absolutely adore visiting the woods as a tiny person, and riding on my dog's back. I am 100% confident my dog would not try to eat me if I smelled the same.
I could do micro art!

Newsletter: Crypto billionaire Justin Sun, who escaped fraud allegations after investing hundreds of millions of dollars into the Trump family’s crypto projects, is now accusing the Trumps’ project of fraud.@molly0xfff

omg too funny. Like crabs in a bucket. Also - I love your work beyond reason. You are spectacular.

The Fairbuds XL just became the first headphones to earn a 10/10 repairability score on our new headphone scorecard!@iFixit nice! I literally just had to go looking for new covers for my headphones because the plastic ones disintegrated, so this is relevant to me.

Alan Turing was a visionary.@ireneista @futurebird the saddest thing I have learned recently is that a number of people who vote have no idea that the brain is what you use to think with. They literally don't grasp that brains are *you*. It explained a lot to me.
-
Alan Turing was a visionary.@ireneista @futurebird for brain funsies, I really liked "the power of habit" and "the man who mistook his wife for a hat"
-
Alan Turing was a visionary.@ireneista @futurebird the reading I've done on consciousness was fascinating - the fact that it comes significantly *after* our reactions to things, and provides a thought train that justifies those reactions, was wild to learn.
-
Alan Turing was a visionary.@futurebird @ireneista oh yes. Pain is just a damage signal tied to specific, rather urgent "get away from the damage" incentives. Consciousness, as far as I can tell from my kindergarten level understanding, is probably a sort of mental reflection function?

Many of you asked that I react to Richard Dawkins announcing that he fell for a chatbot.@rebeccawatson fucking fantastic article. Thank you.
-
Welp, it's taken me a few days to get round to it, but I have just now deleted Chrome (and it's associated LLM malware downloads) from ALL my Macs.@cstross I've been using FF, Brave, and DuckDuckGo, with occasional tangents into less functional browsers like Mojeek, Swisscows, and Ecosia. What drove you to pick FF exclusively?

For no reason at all, please take a look at this thread I wrote a few months ago to remind yourself how terrible Reflect Orbital is:@sundogplanets the enemy of my enemy might not be my friend - but common interests can be useful?

For no reason at all, please take a look at this thread I wrote a few months ago to remind yourself how terrible Reflect Orbital is:@sundogplanets I do not know any space lawyers. I had never considered space law as a field. Could they consider "defendant pays my fees" as a part of the suit? Have you considered reaching out to other major satellite companies who may have a stake, like NG or Blue Origin or even (gag) Starlink?
