@neil @girlonthenet @mindpersephone @JenJen @alice @Jaimieserotica @GoingDownWithSundial for me it's risk of a negative response from parents. I am a Scout leader and have been PTA chair of my local primary. I wish to continue to contribute to my community and not get 'cancelled' by those with different opinions about sex and life!
I guess I need an alt account

@infobeautiful particularly enjoying 'fake tan' .. it's so true (says I who grew up in Harlow!)
@ncrav @cazabon i did exactly this with an old 1950s record player recently
But it almost worked... the arm did not come down straight onto the record. about 100 moving parts!! One spring left over... hmm. No good manuals / diagrams I could find.
I had one blurry picture that I could just see the edge of a spring I forgot to put back on. It worked!
Be brave. Take stuff apart and learn. Take pictures! Happy tinkerer for 50 years...
Reconome seem to provide a 12mth warrantee which feels a bit low today. CeX offer 5 years for most 2nd hand tech now!
Device support seems to be via Good Things Foundation delivered via Digital Inclusion Hubs. Near me this appears to be via my local library.
Probably ok for consumer use; not for business response times maybe?
Still, great to see something being tried!
@neil a quick dig into the referenced playbook shows this initiative is supported by reconome:
https://recono.me/
They claim 'NIST 800-88 data wiping.'
Hopefully this means the device storage does not need to be destroyed, or this whole process is kinda useless

@neil I am inclined to agree with others here; first we need a conversation in each locality about the purpose of their town in the modern age, where most trade no longer takes place face to face or locally at all. So why congregate at all?
I'd suggest the prime motive has moved to socialising and preening; things which define ourselves, rather than satisfying any basic need for supplies. Hence all the food/drink based social spaces, barbers and nail bars! Do we have the right mix, though?
