CIRCLE WITH A DOT

I had a playlist going during the zine making session, and every time a #postpunk style song came on, the same person kept asking who the band was. After a while I told her “I think you like post-punk” and she was like “I don’t know what that is.” I described it as best I could and then put on #GangofFour “Entertainment” and she was sooo into it lol. That’s one of my favorite albums ever (and I hadn’t heard it in a while.) Feels great to turn someone on to your favorite music.

Okay, we did it. We got together and made a quick-turnaround #zine and it was so fun. Someone even brought a typewriter. I’m curious how making this casual, intimate thing will inform the end project (the more formal eco-lit “zine”). I think the most important part was just getting to know each other better and hopefully bonding over a shared project.

Zines and bands get documented but #punk houses rarely do. I only recently realized that communal living is not a universal punk experience. It’s hard for me to imagine what punk means without the freedom of super cheap rent and food sharing. That’s what made it possible to travel and tour. I first met folks who lived at 309 in Pensacola when I lived on the West Coast. Then when I moved to New Orleans, we’d go there to play shows and hang on the beach.

I’ve been listening to Straw Man Army’s latest release for a couple of years now and finally decided to move to their previous release “SOS” (2022). They’ve released three LPs since 2020 that comprise a trilogy. Straw Man Army are my favorite current #punk band. The music is political, pensive anarcho post-punk. The lyrics are spoken or chanted, mostly dystopian, but somehow an optimism shines through the cracks. https://lavidaesunmus.bandcamp.com/album/sos

Every issue of HOMOCORE anarcho-queer punk zine created 1988-1991 by @tomjennings is now available as a print anthology. This is an incredible example of #zines as lifelines—vital touch points for psychological survival. Resist psychic death!

@Bikil that’s because we’re using the word “zine” willy nilly nowadays. If they had invited me to a planning meeting for an eco-art journal I could have prepared myself

Was invited to join a group of women & nb folks to create an eco zine about #Florida. It was very lovely on one level and very shocking on another. Two ppl present worked at commercial magazines. Adding graphic designers and artistic directors to the zine project were discussed. Silly me thought we would be putting the whole thing together ourselves. I don’t think most were even familiar with #zines as related to subculture. It feels like concept has been gutted and sterilized over time.

Tonie Joy gets a lot of well-deserved attention for #MossIcon, but I wanted to shout out bassist Monica Digialleonardo
for her creative contribution to their overall sound. Joy says she was the most accomplished musician in the band when they began (they were all teens.) The fact that there’s no record of her playing in any other bands after this adds to Moss Icon’s mystery & mystique. #punk #posthardcore

#PatadiseLost is the most white-boy #zine I’ve ever made, but it’s just a reality of the hardcore #punk scene that most ppl involved were cis/het white guys. Still, I managed to include the perspectives and contributions of women & people of color as best I could. Queerness comes into play in terms of spaces. This zine is about reconstructing the memory of 80s & 90s Sarasota and it’s no surprise that some of the best places to hang out—the places with the best music & atmosphere—were #GayBars.
