  • Is #mastodon becoming an echo chamber?
    securitywriter@infosec.exchangeS securitywriter@infosec.exchange

@scottjenson a few points to consider, I suppose.

    1. What if the voices aren’t welcome because of what they say being antithetical to the values of the Fediverse?

    2. Why is *more* always the goal? I have more human interactions on here with <10k followers than I do on other platforms with 100k+

    3. Most people are welcome here, it isn’t pollution because there’s no algorithm to present those people to me. It’s far from perfect here, but is natural that smaller, more ideologically driven communities are more politically-minded, and prepared to stand on principle if they disagree with someone’s politics.

    4. Journalists unquestioningly hyping a failing technology aren’t in journalism, they’re in marketing

    5. Maybe that technology isn’t welcome in real communities because it is inherently harmful, built primarily on theft of our labour and creative output, and only serves to enrich the Big 4/5/6 etc. Many of us moved here to get out of their orbit.

    6. I hope you didn’t just compare people not wanting to listen to corporate mouthpieces to marginalised communities being mistreated. Truly through the looking glass if so.

  • @jerry just thinking through the inevitable nightmares inbound from UK, EU, and US age verification requirements for social media, where does this land us on Infosec.exchange?
    securitywriter@infosec.exchangeS securitywriter@infosec.exchange

@jerry this is what I keep coming back to, and mentioned it earlier in reference to websites.

~15% sites are actually GDPR ‘compliant’.

Good luck getting anyone to do anything with active moderation or costing extra money.

    @jerry agreed.

I’d most likely spin up my own instance just for myself.

Nobody is expecting you to go above and beyond the amazing work you put into this place already.

  • I won’t be verifying that I’m over 18 on iOS 26.4, and as of yet, I haven’t seen any downside to not doing so.
    securitywriter@infosec.exchangeS securitywriter@infosec.exchange

I won’t be verifying that I’m over 18 on iOS 26.4, and as of yet, I haven’t seen any downside to not doing so.

I do think this is going to backfire though. If it’s age restricted apps I can’t download, surely I’d just use the website instead.

I hear that the intent is to utilise some sort of age verification flag, but I can’t see it being implemented at all.

Put it this way… from 2016 to 2026, following GDPR mandates for handling visitors to websites only around 15% of public facing websites are GDPR ‘compliant’.

Good luck getting age verification uptake. You can’t block by default, the internet would implode.

I always try to be courteous and understand of those doing customer support. I've been in the trenches in that role in a past life. It's a hard, gruelling job if you have a conscience.

At this point, though, after being given the pre-treatment by their AI powered rage-fluffers, I'm fully prepared to go fucking nuclear on a hair trigger.

ESPECIALLY if you don't make a distinction between AI and human interaction.

How is this a good customer experience?
