  • I'm not enjoying the future where we pick between unmaintained but no AI fork or maintained but Claude was here repo

@theresnotime Real tbh. Because by the aims of the fork, they won't take upstream patches like many of the successful “X but without Y” forks have in the past (see Firefox and Chrome forks).

Unless they're able to sway existing contributors over or are willing to step up and dedicate real effort to working on the project, the capability and bug drift will get real very quickly (not to mention security patch drift).

  • It's cute how China UnionPay's website explicitly calls out that the website supports IPv6 right up next to their logo.

@evilemily Works great until people try to play games and encounter CGNAT. 😛

But yes, there is also a contributing take here about how most of the western world has become landlords over IPv4 addresses. Thankfully mobile networks are largely pushing the IPv6 adoption from my observations because it makes technologies like voice over LTE/5G way easier to deal with than deploying TURN/STUN servers.

  • Our “What happens if the entire AWS region you're in blows up?” questions at work have suddenly become real.

Banking is continually absurd because one has to be able to hold in their head the idea that this system can survive nuclear war AND that an undiscovered junior engineer from outside the industry can close a large percentage of bank branches in the country with a bad config push (see: the software monoculture where US banks and airlines ended up with the same endpoint monitoring system).

One related wargame that still done in core banking is “At what point in nuclear war would we lose the ability to move money? Then at what point do we lose the ability to keep records of money?”.

The goal is generally to make sure that point stays beyond the relevancy of the country and currency in general.

Our “What happens if the entire AWS region you're in blows up?” questions at work have suddenly become real. I just didn't expect it to be so literal.

@theresnotime Yeah I'll take random RISC-V dev boards that I'll never do anything with but bought because the PCB is a cute colour.

Discovering that supporting IPv6 is a point of pride for chinese companies as part of the “China Next Generation Internet” project, which became official government policy in 2021 with a plan to eventually phase out IPv4 by around 2030.

    Meanwhile in AWS… 🙃
