@attoparsec what on earth. first, short-lived theory: shed is leased out to a bunch of tenants that each have a right to, and motivation to have, their own camera, but then...why would you do that?

second theory: someone's having fun and has a bunch of discarded cameras. that would explain some cables hanging loose/missing and a couple of cameras that look like they're pointed straight at the roof.

  • 1/ You can think that Tridge made some mistakes (I do, and he acknowledges them) and disagree with his take on GenAI (I do) but the pitchfork-wielding burn-the-witch mob being led by @davidgerard should show some humility and humanity.

@timbray yeah, i think this was missing from the discussion--like, some breakages were from fixes to symlink bugs, which are a legit common source of security issues that can be hard to fix backwards compatibly. and backcompat is hard for something that handles a million use cases.

seems plausible there'd've been regressions if he'd produced the changes a different way, and ignoring the issues has significant problems.

i just read his response. mostly despairing simply 'cause it reads as fighty so it will probably put fuel on the fire. but the underlying problem seems a lot thornier than the simple story the discussion online made it.

  • So my systems recently updated to rsync 3.4.3, and as soon as that happened my backup system - which does incremental backups using multiple --compare-dest= arguments - started to fail on anything but a full backup.

@mavu @cap_ybarra @JeremiahFieldhaven 3.4.3 looks like mostly security changes (couple bugs say security fixes broke their thing, so it might be the case for your problem). If you only ever rsync with trusted machines, you're all good, but more broadly sitting out future security fixes is less appealing than sitting out future features
