What offends me is seeing them used for day-to-day commuting on smooth paved streets.

All else being equal, would you be more likely to get around (assume accessibility is addressed appropriately) using@TransitBiker This is highly dependent on the "getting around radius." Everywhere I (normally) need to go is within 2 miles, so my answer would be different from a suburbanite. Also, many people don't have metros or trains as an option.
