@hannaB You may want to see this Wikipedia article: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domki_kunitzerowskie . It's in Polish only, but photos will give you a glimpse of how it looked like almost until its demolition in 1960s. The houses were wooden, without running water, toilets or even paved road. Kunitzer built it very cheaply and standards were very low.
Juliusz Kunitzer himself was a very ambiguous figure in the history of Lodz industry. On one hand, he invested a lot in development of the city and charity organisations, on the other - he was quite probably most hated factory owner among ordinary workers, being surrounded by a legend of merciless exploiter and collaborator of Russian Empire. There is also a long Wikipedia article about him (again, in Polish only), but there is no definite answer to what kind of man he really was. That's something that asks for a deep scientific analysis, for sure.
