@williamfields math rock forever. their costumes they remind me a bit of this band planets from cali, not active for super long but their show was ridiculous, noisier, more frenetic, and not microtonal like angine de poitrine. sorry for the IG link, couldn't find any other videos of them but their album turbo jamz is fun

@tsrono lol that’s my son walking up to me and asking “when’s mom gonna be home” and me responding to him . it responds really interestingly to speech because it’s constantly switching between oscillations (lower complexity) and noise (higher)

been working on this max for live device that computes the complexity of the input audio signal using an algorithm called "non-sequential recursive pair substitution" written in the gen~ codebox.

in short the algo is measuring how many iterations it takes to compress the input signal buffer (1024 samples), then that's normalized between 0-1.

since feedback contains repeating oscillations which typically are of a lower complexity, this can allow you to persist feedback sweet spots by doing automatic gain control - when the complexity is low, turn gain down, and when complexity is high, turn gain up.

still in early stages but really having fun exploring. i've done some stuff with my loudspeakers but it's even fun just straight out built-in macbook microphone / speakers.

you can also map the complexity measurement onto other params so you can insert fx into the feedback loop and modify those, gets crazy quickly but still possible to tame it.

also, the laughing/coughing in the title track of the EP always kinda freaks me out. i feel people often assume boc is this 1D nostalgic thing when imho it’s more like exploring the power of suggestion, symbols, indeterminacy, when no explanation is provided

@sean_ae fo sho, makes sense and easy to like, randomly drop in an effect device ontop of a chain while playing in live. definitely can see how both would have their benefits and worth exploring

@sean_ae that reed modeling lead synth (if that’s what that is) is so great, recognize that from the 2022 - sets.

was navigating around tracks in Live trickier than in Max? I feel like one benefit of Max is that everything is in one view, curious if you were able to work around that when presumably different devices are spread around different tracks

@tsrono yeah it’s still better than most pop songs! it just detracts from being truly great imho. sounds like a metronome was left on underneath human playing

the hi hat shuffle work in this song is so poor, producers wrote based on a 6/8 feel but didn’t notice how the 16th note straight hi hats that don’t even line up with the groove, annoys the shit out of me!
