" lonely sitting in your flat, without any connection with people anymore"
    Yeah...
So far I still have Discord. But I might not for much longer.
I still have steam to chat with friends who are also on steam. But some only have a playstation or xbox. And none of them are on fedi.
It was hard to convince some of my friends to follow me to signal. I don't think I'll be able to convince anyone to switch to IRC, XMPP or forums.
Discord is where all my guilds are. It's where all my friends have their little chat groups.

Leaving Facebook and Twitter was easy. Leaving Discord will be near impossible if I want to keep any of my contacts.

I chose to delete my facebook accounts. WhatsApp, Instagram, gone. When a friend planned their birthday party, they had a WhatsApp group where they discussed who would bring what and what everyone would wear.

Of course I was not in that group. I didn't know there was a desscode. I didn't know everyone would bring salad and stuff like that.
I was already excluded, because I have principles.

Friends buy the most recent Ubisoft game, or EA game, or Bethesda game, or Nintendo game, or some other game released by a shady company. I can't. I'm excluded from their talks about their new favorite game, because I have principles.

Friends send me Tiktok links, or Instagram links, or Facebook links. I can't access them because I don't have accounts there. I'm excluded.

The majority of people will freely give up their ID to companies with bad cyber security.
    I won't. And I'll be excluded again.

  • AI Controls (formerly 'kill switch') are landing in today's Firefox Nightly, and will land with Firefox 148 later this month.

@firefoxwebdevs I have a suggestion. When the software updates to the new version, advertise the new AI features through a popup with two buttons. One says "activate", which will activate the AI features in general, the other button says "dismiss" and leaves the features turned off. And instead of a "kill switch" in the settings, have a "activate AI features" button that turns into a "disable AI features" button after being clicked.

That's how it should be. Why isn't it already like this?

@firefoxwebdevs all AI features should be disabled by default. There shouldn't be a need for an "AI killswitch".

No, AI features shouldn't even be in the browser to begin with. Make them plugins. Problem solved.

@firefoxwebdevs yeah, so the feature of some LLM reading your tabs and suggesting tab names is opt-in. You have to explicitly agree to use it. It doesn't happen automatically. It is opt-in.

What's not opt-in is this AI nonsense in general. And that's what people are complaining about.
I can't see any benefit of having an AI in your browser at all.
Nobody wants it, nobody needs it. We don't want a "generate tab names with AI" button in our browser.

@firefoxwebdevs maybe change the buttons to "dismiss" to dismiss this message forever and "activate" to activate the feature. That way there won't be any more confusion and the opt-in nature of this feature is more apparent.

@firefoxwebdevs if it is disabled by default and only activates after explicitly clicking a button, then it is technically opt-in.
Can I dismiss this message with "cancel" forever or does it show up every time I want to create a new tab group?

    @firefoxwebdevs
"We mostly refrain from using "opt-in" because people have different definitions of opt-in"

    What bullshit is this?
Opt-in means it is disabled until I explicitly enable it.
