@meuwese Funny enough, our theater has traditional paper posters up on the streets for most shows. There are no metrics available for those. (Though I assume the advertising agency makes up some numbers on request, like “50.000 people pass this poster in the train station every day“ or something.) The advantage of posters is that they advertise not only the specific show, but also the theater's presence in the city!

@geonz Okay, my bad, not idealy worded. I explained my intentions in a reply thread later on. (In short, I want to convince people who are still fixated on numbers to join the Fediverse.)

@zazoobred Pixelfed is not fully usabel for many, myself included, because it does not support text-only posts and the video and audio support is weird. One is not really federated if the majority of the Fediverse is inaccessible, methinks.

@44 Yes, in a way they would kinda defeat the purpose if I wanted the natural reach of a post, but how would I measure that? Besides, I wanted to find out how well a post with some interesting content would do, in order to persuade people (or theaters) to join the Fediverse. Asking for it to be boosted or quoted seemed like a way to simulate an interesting post. Worked.

@SteveJB Thank you, I bookmarked it! Another aspect was just mentioned to me offline: “metrics” might not be as important as “optics” – since German theaters are publicly funded and there are more and more elected officials here, being visible to them might end up being beneficial!

@KimSJ I feel the same way about engagement statistics, they’re useless to me! Mastodon is great and fun without them. However, I was thinking that maybe for someone who hasn’t made the jump yet, some numbers could be an incentive, just because they are so used to them.

@sonjaschuh01 Thank you so much! I’ll give this to someone who’s good with math and computers. I have a hunch it could be really helpful. (I’m terrible at math. Did you know dancers are better at math than musicians? I heard them count to eight!)

@futurebird Now, that’s an interesting perspective I hadn’t considered! As a performer, my main use of Mastodon besides playing games is to post “Look at what I will be doing“ and “Look at what I did”
… and “Look at my cat,” of course.

@jesuisatire Fair! Thanks for the reply! (I’ve been wondering about the reach of a post outside of hashtags, and whether this could be used as an argument to encourage theaters to join the Fediverse. My current theater is on Mastodon but has never used the account!)

@patrick I worked in Wiesbaden, but have not yet made my house debut there. I stepped in as Elsa for Lohengrin rehearsals and didn’t think to negotiate getting a performance as well. I should have, that was a rookie mistake. It’s a beautiful house!

@DavidBridger I like that! Do you have readers who interact with you on Mastodon? I’m not trying to sell anything either. I see my posts about upcoming performances as public announcements and try to make them informative: what, when, where, who. But then again, I enjoy the luxury of not having to sell tickets. I get the same fee whether 50 or 5000 people come. (Although I prefer the latter! )

@maharanisantoso Waaaaay more interactions than I expected! Most of them have been positive, but I also had to learn that bursting out of my own comfy bubble exposed me to not-so-nice people I didn’t even know were on here.

@pthane Yes, I would probably block them too. It would be great if we could live in a world without advertising! There is a difference between advertising that tries to trick people to spend money on something they don’t need in order to make a profit, and advertising that informs the public about nice things. Such as a nearby performance that you might otherwise easily miss! Thank you for your reply!
