Alas, Dan Simmons, called away to the time war. Hyperion cantos, Summer of Night, Song of Kali (it's a horror story, not a travelogue), The Terror (I haven't seen the series, but I can guess it's 10% as cruel as the book), read them all. I bounced on Ilium, but that was probably just me at that time, I know some like it a lot.

@flyingsaceur Also Wild Palms has this drug "Mimezine" that lets you BE in the holoscreen shows, sponsored by the Scientology expy. Except it also rots your brain and makes you see cathedrals everywhere. VR is a bad trip.
