The EU has called for the "urgent" creation of alternatives to Visa and Mastercard to reduce dependence on the US.
According to Director General of the EU Banking Alliance, the dominance of US payment systems is a potential leverage point should transatlantic relations deteriorate.
As the Financial Times notes, Visa and Mastercard currently account for approximately two-thirds of card transactions in the eurozone, while 13 EU countries lack a national alternative.
