@gruber Since you mentioned Japanese technique and fitting pieces together without nails, screws or glue, it reminded me of the stone walls of Osaka Castle. I visited Japan recently and was amazed to know that the walls are built using large interlocking granite boulders, without mortar. They are also less susceptible to earthquakes.
