@flwwhtrbt Honestly, that's a bummer. There's still a fairly tall barrier to entry for quote/unquote normal users. Also, when I worked at Thunderbird, I can't tell you how many times we all ended up on Slack (our backup) because the Matrix instance was either down or not syncing or otherwise borked.
Not to mention using it on multiple devices can be a serious pain point.
@myTerminal That's heartbreakingly true, and as someone who has built and managed many communities, I totally get it. It just sucks because the communities get more and more fragmented.
@GlitchGhost Between AI and enshittification, It definitely feels like the right time to being back the gold standards from the classic web, especially RSS!
I know this #Discord nonsense has a lot of people searching for alternatives (like Matrix, Stoat, etc), and those alternatives have a chance to shine right now. BUT we need to go back to discussions and knowledge being searchable on the open web!
I say bring back the forums. It's time.
@CoastalCoasting PS: @codemonkeymike can attest to how easy it is for people to use. He upcycles computers, installs a unique version of Linux on them, and gives them away to all kinds of people with very little technical experience.
@CoastalCoasting So I would ask you things like:
-What type of desktop look and behavior do you like? (Windows or Mac?)
-Have you installed an operating system before?
-What kind of PC or laptop do you want to use Linux on?
-Do you want to play games?
-What kind of software do you regularly use on Windows or macOS?
Knowing all this makes it easier to recommend the RIGHT version 
But I promise it's significantly easier to install and use than most people think.

@CoastalCoasting Mmm, it's a tough question to answer. Linux is interesting because of how diverse and customizable it can be. Most people are going to tell you "oh, you have to use X," or "only Y is the right choice." I believe the right approach is to ask people what their needs are first.
