@analogfusion There different, although (I think) made from similar material. They’re 3-4 inches tall and maybe an inch in diameter. The design is really pretty ingenious, there’s a plate underneath them with a spring such that instead of the candles “burning down,” the flame stays at the same place while the plate gradually moves up.

It was great backpacking (back when I was much younger and in better shape) because the thing is small and light, the candles last 15 hours each, and it’s enough light to play cards by, read a book, etc. without having to deal with batteries. A box of 9 candles is something like $15. The company also sells candles made from a different wax that burn a bit longer, albeit they’re a bit more expensive. I’d imagine there’s probably also 3rd party candles that fit this thing, but I’m still on my first box after many years so haven’t needed to check.

@analogfusion I’ve got the original UCO lantern, and after this year’s snowpocalypse I’ve been eyeing the triple-candle version…

We believe the outdoors isn’t just a place—it’s a mindset. A return to what’s real. A reconnection with the wild, with each other, and with ourselves. Our gear is built for the seekers, the stargazers, and those who love sitting around a campfire. We’re not just selling camping gear. We’re outfitting a movement.

I also reduced my dev time by 15%. With #XTOL I didn’t really have to worry about that switching to rotation, but #HC110 seems a lot more sensitive to it based on the other negs I’ve scanned so far being super dense. It looks to me like I could have reduced it further - but it’s hard to tell given these were shots of dark mountains and bright skies. The two shots where it appears I clearly metered on the mountains look the best so far, but I am still looking forward to seeing how these scan.

I need to go take some pictures of some familiar spots with this film and developer combo to be a better benchmark. #LargeFormat #DevelopYourOwn

Hot take: a signed PDF does not a risk control make.

There will always be people who understand their part in a larger process and apply critical thinking, and people that just blindly follow a procedure step by step. Signing a PDF just becomes another step that the people who don’t pay attention do while not paying attention.

  • I'm curious...do you use a stop bath when developing film?
    kaiser_franz@infosec.exchangeK kaiser_franz@infosec.exchange

@tmcfarlane @tomnorthfilm @carusb @rustoleumlove I tried to get fixer dealt with locally but in our county I was told either we have a quantity large enough to make it worth paying a commercial chemical disposal company, or it's a small enough amount that the local water facilities can handle. The county specifically told me that fixer wasn't accepted at the local recycling facility that accepts things like paints, used motor oil, etc. So I've come to terms with dumping it down the sink. Luckily I only go through 3-4 gallons per year (if that) so it's not a lot, and I pour it out in stages with the water running so as to not hit the system all at once.

My local photo shop is in the process of getting a silver recovery system going, so once that's in place I'll just save up the jugs until I make it there and have them empty them and give them back to me.

@shom @carusb @coldkennels I also do photo-flo in a separate container. I haven't personally had any issues with photo-flo on my Jobo reels, but I heard about others having this issue so early in my developing I changed my process to have it in a separate beaker so as to avoid completely. I also use distilled water with the photo flo (between photography and cleaning vinyl records I've always got a decent bit of distilled water around) and rarely have drying spots on my negs. Occasionally if I do, I run a kim wipe with some homemade record cleaning fluid (distilled water, photo flo, small amount of 90% isopropyl) that has ended up being great for this purpose. It dries quickly and removes any remaining spots (I do this ONLY on the non-emulsion side).

An added benefit of the photo-flo in a separate beaker is if I know I'll be developing several rolls over several days, I just put a paper towel on top of the beaker and have it there for dunking the following session's negs into before hanging. I don't let it sit for more than a week or so.

@rustoleumlove Do you happen to know if he reuses the stop bath from roll to roll, and how long his fixer lasts? I just rinse after the developer, and then pour the fixer in. I generally get through about 65-70 rolls before I mix up new fixer, fixing for 5 mins each time, whether it's the first or the last roll.

I'm still relatively new at this, and not asserting that this is the "right" way, but it did make me curious what others do!

  • I’ve about had it with the Stearman Press tank.
    kaiser_franz@infosec.exchangeK kaiser_franz@infosec.exchange

@tmcfarlane I just ordered a Jobo 2500 series tank and a 4x5 reel that holds 6 sheets...so we'll see how that goes. I have about 8 exposures from this past weekend I haven't developed yet (I only got through 4 sheets today in the Stearman tank) so I may hang onto them until the new tank and reel comes in…

The Zebra tank looked really well made and interesting, but unless I was reading it incorrectly it is made for glass and metal plates, not film itself which was a bit disappointing to read.

I’ve about had it with the Stearman Press tank. I’m going to look into the Jobo wide tank - I have the rotator so it wouldn’t be the biggest investment, and holy hell it’s got to be easier to use. I’ve tried all the squeezing, the sealing, the being careful about liquid volume, the “make sure you’re holding it right”…but the Stearman always leaks, it’s hard to load, it’s super easy to knock over…there has got to be a better way!
