Apple Engineers Show How Flimsy AI ‘Reasoning’ Can Be

The new frontier in large language models is the ability to “reason” their way through problems. New research from Apple says it's not quite what it's cracked up to be.

  • "Trying to "engage" with fascism is like trying to have an intimate emotional relationship with a running chainsaw.
    joriki@infosec.exchangeJ joriki@infosec.exchange

"Trying to "engage" with fascism is like trying to have an intimate emotional relationship with a running chainsaw. The very act of framing fascism as a reasonable partner for dialogue is an act of propaganda that validates and normalizes fascism. Again, you're expected to be too dim to notice this.

This is super common across corporate media, which is financially incentivized to pretend that the real problem in the current American moment isn't grotesque corruption and fascism at the hands of soulless autocratic assholes and bigots, it's just some sort of ambiguous, sourceless, partisan animus nobody has control over."

"The French senate has unanimously passed a law that stops grocery stores from throwing away and intentionally spoiling food that approaches best-buy dates.

Instead, they’ll have to give all of this food to charities and food banks, which will provide the hungry with millions of more meals. Just a 15% increase in donated food will mean 10 million more meals per year."

    joriki@infosec.exchangeJ joriki@infosec.exchange

"The reason we don't have effective protections for climate change (or functional gun control, or universal health care, or cheap broadband) is because the U.S. Congress is often too corrupt to function. Monied interests have polluted state and federal legislatures to the point they no longer serve the public interest.

This isn't some errant opinion, it's a documentable, provable fact. Yet you'll notice that for the New York Times, the idea that the structural and ethical integrity of the U.S. government has been wholly compromised by the extraction class simply plays absolutely no useful contextual role in the story."

    a #tax #protest is an ineffective self-own

the US federal government creates money when it spends it into existence after congressional authorization

your tax dollars go into the bit bucket

if congress has authorized the spending, nobody has to check if there's enough money; there is always "enough" money, just like a scorekeeper always has "enough" points available for the players

all of the "pay fors" and budget theater at the federal level are self-imposed restrictions on fiat currency spending; that's why there's always money for the military, oil industry subsidies, or financial sector bailouts, but never enough for food, healthcare, housing, education, etc.

there are practical limits on federal spending, but not financial ones (practical limits: inflation, availability of goods and services, crowding out private buyers, crowding out other uses for resources)

federal spending creates the tax dollars for taxes, not the other way 'round; taxes are there (primarily) to ensure acceptance and use of the currency so that goods and services will be priced in the currency the gov wants to spend (see the history of colonial currencies)
