  • Since I can’t sleep, here’s another hot take: The world would be a better place if everyone‘s science literacy was much better.

@davidho.bsky.social @Luke_Drury The education system of too many countries starts to force specialisation at 16. This is wrong. It’s also increasingly harder even than 25 years ago to cross streams. Employers don’t seem to want generalists or older people with wider experience. The economic means for people to change around has more or less evaporated apart from the most highly paid. To be able to afford to live as a (STEM) teacher is bordering on needing to be independently wealthy. In short it stinks. Mega corporations need to pay more taxes to fund a well and broadly educated population rather than gambling on tulips.

@wfk @quixoticgeek British comedian Les Dawson had a thing where he would play the piano terribly but only because he could play it well and knew how to deviate into the best kind of bad.

@quixoticgeek Since people have been trying to ban that for centuries and failing in a language that has no official proscriptively empowered guardian (which is a good thing), I think that (star)ship has sailed.

@rhys They can’t accept responsibility because then they, not big pharma, the govt or whatever would be responsible for an utter horror and most people would actively fight that self image.

    hardingar@mindly.socialH hardingar@mindly.social

@quixoticgeek once a day because I used to not really and then I spent a full day with a Disney sticker on my neck and figured that was not acceptable.
