  • Does anyone have any tips for how to cycle in a skirt/dress?
    forth@neuromatch.socialF forth@neuromatch.social

@SRLevine @helenclayton Lots of good answers here already that I'll have to read in more detail later, but yes - I made fenders with integrated skirt guards this winter out of old plastic campaign signs.

Between those and the low frame of my bike, I can ride with no problem in skirts and dresses that fall to mid-calf, even if they have a lot of fullness to them. I rarely wear anything longer than that, but when I do I'll usually tie a knot in the fabric or gather it up with a hair scrunchie to ensure that it doesn't get into the chain.

I don't have a photo handy at the moment; sorry!

  • Trying to remember all the cursed notation from pit orchestra scores for musical theater but it's been too long.

Trying to remember all the cursed notation from pit orchestra scores for musical theater but it's been too long. I think I scanned one back in the day, but I don't know if I still have the file somewhere.

There was some fun stuff, though... edge-cases of DS al Coda and repeat usage. Vamp ad lib, I think, while waiting for cues from actors? We used to joke about vamp ad nauseam and vamp ad infinitum.

  • First attempt at making a cornet mouthpiece adapter for the GVS Elipse is turning out pretty rough, and I'm not sure how to improve it.

First attempt at making a cornet mouthpiece adapter for the GVS Elipse is turning out pretty rough, and I'm not sure how to improve it. I molded this in place in the Elipse, and the silicone sealant just didn't settle into place well enough. Also, some of it didn't set even after 12+ hours. Anyone have tips on DIY silicone molding?

If I could readily acquire a spare valve hole plug (also pictured) I'd just drill a hole in it and form a seal around the mouthpiece with silicone, but I haven't found anywhere that sells just the plugs.

  • I think I won the award for "weirdest bike mechanical problem of the week".

@Primavera @SRLevine Yeah, I've had the same sorts of issues with stainless bolts. But they're preferred for the majority of applications on bicycles because rust is more of a problem. And I suppose it's one (albeit not the only) reason a lot of bolts on bicycles have torque specs, even if most people get away with tightening by feel.

@SRLevine @Primavera Yeah, I'd be extremely surprised if that bolt was anything other than stainless steel. Not entirely implausible for it to have sheared, but I'd expect it to be a rare occurrence.

@SRLevine Yikes! That is not a bolt that I would expect to fail. 😬
