But I'd have to chase up the details and I am not sure how that would map onto Europe.

We know that populations of previously thought to be unmanaged forests worldwide actually manage their forests quite a bit by promoting certain species or by creating specific ecological niches. I have always imagined European forests (at least after the last ice age when populations followed the retractions of the ice) to be more like that? What evidence do we have that they were untended?

I keep seeing articles like this, about how people choosing to drink less is hurting bars and restaurants, and it's almost always framed as people, especially younger generations, don't like to drink.@MLE_online alcohol is, in many cases, probably more expensive than other recreational drugs now. Lits of them around. Kids still like to party.
