@YKantRachelRead fucking hell. okay we had heard the names before but this definitely is context we didn't know about. they can get in the bin.

@MissConstrue to be clear, fetishizing the military isn't exactly a hindrance. those types totally join the military all the time. but you absolutely cannot show disdain for everyone around you in what is essentially a cult that requires you to fit in by any means necessary.

@MissConstrue Hegseth (and a lot of the current administration) seems like the kind that both fetishizes the military for the worst possible reasons (not that there's necessarily a good reason to do it, but ya know) and also looks down on the real people that make it up. people like that do not join the military or don't make it very long.

@MissConstrue I think they are betting on the fact that US special forces are mostly reactionaries, more likely to kill those they see as beneath them than their capitalist overlords.

@vrandecic it's really wild to me how people will think her statement was true just because she believed it to be at the time? that doesn't make any sense. people can be wrong, especially when they make overly confident statements of fact.

  • "generative models are fine"say you have no friends without saying you have no friendsif you had friends who are visual artists, musicians, writers, translators, or any other affected profession, your views would be different

@lumi @cloudskater I mean LLMs are also just worse for translation in many ways than the machine translations we already had prior. they have the same issues of not understanding context and nuance, but not just are they much larger models with more power use, they also are prone to just making stuff up too. which is not something you want in a translation. at the same time the output might look more polished, giving the impression of a better translation while sacrificing accuracy. I think that's actually very dangerous.

  • Google Search rests on a social contract: their bots can crawl our sites, they can index our sites, and they can show excerpts of our sites because
    elexia@twoot.siteE elexia@twoot.site

@inthehands if they decide that people doing this hurts their business model they will simply stop respecting things like robots.txt. their gamble is that people rely on Google more than they do on other websites and if they have to kill the rest of the web to monopolize access to information they will.
