@lifewithtrees oh that's interesting; thanks for the ref. Apparently you can be manipulative without having a clue about what's going on. It's just a technique, a set of stereotyped responses. I'll buy that, although I still think that "gaslighting" gives us too much credit. Charles Boyer had a specific goal. He wasn't abusing just as a power play.

"Gaslighting" means it's intentional. I think you're overestimating the intelligence and self-awareness of my fellow countrycreatures. American exceptionalism is the product of a pathological lack of self-knowledge.
