    Speaking of harm.

In 2012 Apple made their own Maps app the default on iOS. It sucked even in the US.

In 2014 it still sucked, but already grabbed 70% of maps traffic just because it was the default.

It took 13 years and regulatory pressure for Apple to pet people switch default maps, and only in the EU: https://mjtsai.com/blog/2025/03/14/dma-compliance-default-maps-app-in-eu/

How did this benefit consumers or American companies?

What I get to enjoy is the consequence of giving a supranational trillion-dollar corporation too much power. Again, this simple thought is somehow beyond your comprehension.

It's not that you don't have a perfect solution. It's that you literally don't have any idea of what a solution may even be. You haven't once said what you think it could be. It's all kindergarten-level magical thinking: https://mastodon.nu/@dmitriid/116741745745687736

I don't have to like DMA to push back on idiotic claims and shouts.

I don't have to like DMA to at least try and engage with the *substance* of why vendor lock-in in a duopoly hurts everyone.

BTW. If you think that shitty genmoji and a glorified timer is "being left behind in technology", think again.

And, again, I could ask you "how does vendor lock in help other US companies", but I asked this before, and you were incapable of answering it.

You tell me, are you happy with having no thoughts but "EU bad" and "bend the knee", and being unable to answer a question "what do you think the regulation should actually be like?" when you so actively demand it to change?

DMA exposed the simple fact that your corporate overlords will deny you any and all features when they are as much as asked to offer you choice. And yet, your response is invariably "yes, daddy"

    That is:

    """

There exists some magical regulation that will force Apple and Google give up on their ways, and open up their platforms without fighting, without denying users features, without malicious compliance, without putting up onerous obstacles.

Any regulation that is not that magical regulation is bad by definition and should never exist. Companies must be allowed to do whatever until such magical regulation appears

Funnily enough, the only thing all of you have is irrational hatred for regulations and the EU. And are clearly incapable of answering some simple questions "does vendor lock-in hurt American companies, too? Is lack of competition and user choice ultimately bad for US consumers, too?"

Oh wait, you're too busy hating the EU that "specifically targets American companies" or something.

This is what it comes down to in all conversations.

Somehow people are okay with regulating every single industry. People are okay with anti-monopoly, anti-trust and other competitive regulation in every single industry.

When it comes to internet in general and supranational corps in particular who literally tell you, the user, to fuck off... "oh no, regulation is bad, has to be rethought etc."

    > I’ll let it speak for itself in this post, but this does not contradict Apple’s position and statements in any way.

Except in this tiny unimportant overlooked sentence: "absolutely nothing in the DMA prohibits Apple from rolling out new features in the EU"

Whereas Apple somehoiw demands a 1.5 year exemption to roll out its features, and continues the tactic of delay, deny, gaslight

    Apple: no.

The only truly useful thing from visual segment was "add these dates to my calendar" from a photo of a poster (I nearly built an app like that myself 🙂 )

And they never went for rather obvious things like "I have this in my fridge, what can I cook" or "what's this plant" a la https://www.picturethisai.com/ (genuinely useful, I use it a lot)
