It's that time again, the 3rd Thursday of the month, and that means time to meet up for @BurbSecWest. I look forward to seeing everyone out there. Details for where and when are available here: https://burbsec.com/west/, but the TLDR version is 6:00pm at Granite City, Naperville.

I look forward to seeing you there.

  • I don't get it.

I don't get it. How does showing my ID to your website protect kids? After all, I'm not a kid. My ID doesn't belong to a kid. How is violating my privacy to use a solution like Discord solve for keeping kids away from "icky" stuff online?

You may not be too shocked to hear this, but I don't really think that "age verification" solutions on general-use web sites is the way to protect kids online. But it is a great way to erode (if not dismantle) online privacy.

  • So the big 🏈 game is over with, and we get to exercise America's real favorite pastime: talking about the commercials!

So the big 🏈 game is over with, and we get to exercise America's real favorite pastime: talking about the commercials! Well there was one commercial I think we should talk about, since it focused on reuniting lost pets with their families. The problem with that lovely facade is the privacy nightmare that enables those reunions. Spoiler alert: even as a dog owner I don't think the tradeoff is worth it.

Sure the ad that ran during that football game makes it seem so wonderful to help families find their pets, but what are the underpinning privacy issues that enable such a heartwarming moment? Are they worth it?
