And to make things more confusing apparently someone figured out how to add voice chat to IRC.

    Diane (@alienghic@timeloop.cafe)

IRC voice channels, wait what? I know there's been work on implementing some of the discord/slack bling in IRC, like emoji, replies, and editing, but voice channels? I just saw voice channels mentioned on the side bar of a screenshot of this web IRC client. https://github.com/ObsidianIRC/ObsidianIRC And the draft IRC 3 spec's abstract says "This document describes version 3 of the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) protocol, which extends the original IRC protocol to include support for audio and video capabilities. It defines new message types, commands, and channel modes that allow for the transmission of audio and video data within the existing IRC framework, while maintaining backward compatibility with text-only clients and servers." https://www.ietf.org/archive/id/draft-samuelson-irc-v3-00.html

    How's matrix's moderation tools?

There's someone who likes posting gore to public matrix and xmpp channels, some of the most maintained xmpp clients implemented some moderation tools where an admin can delete individual posts or everything from some account.

It unfortunately only works with some clients, but I pretty quickly learned to switch to the clients that do support moderation.

I thought matrix uses a blockchain/git like synchronization algorithm, so I think deleting messages is harder to do.

(Though on the plus side, If you want the message history it does get synced between servers and rooms can stay up if one server goes down.)

For what it's worth, I kind of think from the xmpp space the client that's got the best chance to be called discord like is movim.

I mean as a global warming depressive, I'd really like to live in a world where I get to keep regularly having access to water, food, and shelter, and I'm pretty worried the world the fossil fuel companies and governments are dragging us into won't let us peasants have such luxuries.

I found this company EV West that uses the Tesla powertrain for retrofits for gasoline cars. https://www.youtube.com/@EVWest

I suspect they know quite a bit about what computer buses are needed to control the power train.

I think the earlier generation Li-Ion batteries may burn hotter and be harder to put out than gasoline. But at least there's no CO2.

There's probably room to improve the safety of EV and batteries as we see how things go wrong.

Smaller, lighter vehicles, going more slowly would also make it easier to make them safer.

    That's true.

The older ones had the emergency release directly connected to the door handle.

Tesla made them worse at some point, where the emergency release wasn't connected to the handle.

Honestly the simplest design solution to the door danger is a replacement door design that uses a frame for the window.

All the stupidity is so the glass can be flush with the car body, which then means you need an electric mechanism to retract the glass when you open the door.

Is designing a less stupid retrofit door less resource intensive than ripping the car apart and recycling?

I'm generally of the opinion that as long as there's gas powered cars, industrial civilization is going to be destroyed, so I think it's important to try and reuse whatever EVs exists for as long as they keep working.

Once something important breaks, then it's time to recycle.

Unfortunately that's nearly any electric car.

I think some Chinese companies are making progress on less terrible battery chemistries, but anything energy dense enough for a vehicle is still at least somewhat dangerous.

Unfortunately no one is willing to switch back to a transportation system built around trams or trains with overhead wires.

The Republican censors have highly active trying to suppress information about LGBT people, the history of slavery in the USA, information about global warming, and Israel's genocide.

The USA tiktok ban looked to be most motivated by the information about Israeli genocide.

I tend to summarize it as the conservatives are trying to block access to anything that leads kids to turn against conservatives.

Which depending on the teen can be any of those things.

So yes, they do want to suppress knowledge of complex concepts of gender.

I think it's important to remember the republicans are trying to maintain both a white supremacist racial hierarchy and a rigid patriarchal hierarchy.

I believe the censorship campaign is about preventing teens from learning about things that led the to protest against the government, like global warming, the existence of LGBT people, and the treatment of Palestinians
