If you can iso boot on the destination hosting,
You could build a ReaR rysnc server in the destination hosting. Shutdown all the databases and do a make backup.
Boot a new machine off the rescue iso and it'll hit the ReaR server, load the backup, rebuild initram, etc. and Bob's your uncle. -

More specifically: I ran grub-update and a did a few things so the machine boots and I can see its terminal showing the correct host name – but it’s not reachable via the net. So something is different between the setup of source and target system. I tried copying a bunch of files from the rescue system into the target system and rebooting but to no avail. I am still missing some feature to bring the target back online.

If it's booting, the hard part is done.
Sounds silly, but is the IP, gateway, etc right?
Can you ping out? -
