@sundogplanets I grew up on a farm where periodic infrastructure disasters would happen to us and our neighbors

Thankfully, most of the neighbors we had would do effective mitigation if we were gone. I hope you have neighbors like that

@sundogplanets come to think of it, this explains a lot of dessert trading in my youth

@autolycos Yep, relying heavily on neighbours right now!! I really really love how rural people really do have your back when bad things happen (despite voting for government reps that do NOT have your back, sigh).

First major infrastructure disaster back home on the farm that we're having to figure out remotely. Scary awful medical things happening with a close family member. Reflect Orbital fucking sucks. I am hopelessly behind on a bazillion things I said I would do. Feeling very stressed.

But I have a pre-interview for CBC's Cross-Country Checkup in a few minutes, because they want to talk about space exploration and satellite pollution. So at least I'm succeeding in science communication?

@sundogplanets Reflect Orbital is even making headlines in the Dutch national news broadcaster. The article pointed out the nonsense of the business case of providing light for solar farms, and the ecological harm and how it ruins the night sky, but none on the debris or possible reactive species formed during re-entry. Glad I've been reading your threads about the topic as I wonder how innocuous it would have come across if I had no further background, probably would have only been upset about the nocturnal beasties.

@sundogplanets One of the good things about rural life – people willing and ready to help.

@sundogplanets I'm so sorry... but i can't help but imagining that the "infrastucture problem" was a satellite hitting your barn. I hope it was less exciting.
