GitHub Copilot got 25x more expensive over night.

I just felt a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of low-effort PRs suddenly cried out and were silenced.

Maintainers worldwide breathe a sigh of relief. Businesses are about to wake up to some very interesting invoices.

@fribbledom I'm happy they're moving to realistic (?) pricing. It'll make for more intelligent decisions about what kind of jobs businesses want to hand over to AI and how much quality they expect for what they're paying. And on whether or not to switch to local LLMs running on local hardware. LLM co-op farms might become a thing.

      We live in interesting times.

@fribbledom software dev businesses already have no idea how to estimate token costs, and haven't developed new pricing strategies. Yet they've been pushing developers to use LLMs for everything - and now we need to find out which operations are even still useful with increased costs.

x25 is only the beginning, seeing how awfully inefficient LLMs are. I'd already be asking "is this still viable if costs increase x100?".

@xarvos @fribbledom everyone needs to increase the prices to a similar level, if they want to be profitable.
The current costs for AI tools all are dumping prices.

@weyoun6 now all we need to do is start acting like spending lots of money on AI agents is the future and watch tons of companies bankrupt themselves.

@stvfrnzl It's because of the billing changes to copilot: https://techcrunch.com/2026/05/30/what-a-joke-github-copilots-new-token-based-billing-spurs-consternation-among-devs/

25x is a guesstimation probably. But it has gotten more expensive in general.

@fribbledom We're slowly moving from "use AI for everything, use it as much as possible" to "hey hey hey, maybe first think, then ask AI"..

There was this page showing graphs of how much revenue each company brings and how much money they spend on providing "AI" and every single one of them was deeeeeply in the deficit.

I'm looking forward to when "Copilot" is the name for a product abandoned by MS and a linter for a yet to be invented programming language.

for sure.. but there are still many many examples of comanies that evaluate their employees by how much they utilize AI πŸ™‚ insane. But I guess that'll change quickly..

@pkotrcka_1 @fribbledom tell me... we are not (yet) officially rated by AI usage, but they set up a dashboard where you can track your AI usage and your line manager tracks the whole team.

Of course I'm deep in the red, but I'm also too old to really care.
