@jpoesen as it turns out. On Mastodon. After using mastodon more actively for the past couple of days I tripped over what I've been unable to find for years on the other social media platforms.
A local volunteer group effort to help people get away from big tech.
@707Kat @jpoesen I would love to volunteer to help people in this way.
The problem is a lack of demand. I don't hear about a lot of people who aren't already technically savvy about this stuff who are interested in moving away from big tech. Usually the reaction I see is "why would I care about that?"

@gerrymcgovern Galicia sounds neat. From what I know it has a pretty active (and I think officially supported) open source and free software community. @jpoesen

@gerrymcgovern I just now looked and they are still sticking with it (in an official capacity, I remember they launched this a few years ago) https://interoperable-europe.ec.europa.eu/collection/open-source-observatory-osor/news/galicia-government-adopts-their-2025-free-software-action-plan
Also, the Free Software community in Spain is really fun to hang out with.

In the UK you have things like Men's Sheds and repair cafes which are popular for this type
Also local cycling charities like Bren bikes and Drosi bikes in #chester and #llangollen
