Bloody-nosed Beetle (Timarcha tenebricosa) - a large and flightless beetle that can often be seen in the daytime, especially in early spring. They feed on members of the bedstraw family, and there is plenty of Lady's Bedstaw and Hedge Bedstraw in the field I found this one in.
They get their common name from a red liquid they produce when threatened. I don't tend to threaten beetles, so I've never actually seen it!
